Due to abundant local produce, Andalucía became one of the empire’s wealthiest outposts. Arab Domination Some 700 years later, when the Roman Empire began to come apart, tribes from northern Europe laid claim to the peninsula. The Vandals and then the Visigoths ruled for some three centuries. Politically unstable, a question of rightful succession in AD 710 led to the enlistment of Muslim armies from North Africa. The Moors saw their chance and within 10 years had taken over. Moorish Sophistication The Moors were custodians of the best features of Roman civilization: religious tolerance, scientific and philosophical thought, and engineering and cultural refinements (see pp34– 5).

Lanjarón Las Alpujarras On the southern side of the Sierra Nevada is this dramatic zone, home to a stunning series of white villages (above). The architecture here is pure Moorish, almost identical to that found in the Rif Mountains of Morocco. Houses are flat-roofed, untiled, clustered together and joined by neighbourly bridges. Famous since Roman times for its curative mineral springs, the town (below) is now a modern balneario (spa) and marks the beginning of the Alpujarras proper. Below the long main street you’ll find a ruined Moorish castle, from which the views across the gorge are breathtaking.
