I remember that when we got bunk beds, I was mad that Gloria got the top bunk, but the decision had nothing to do with me having cerebral palsy, it had to do with me wetting the bed. Seriously, how would you feel if your sister peed on you from the upper bunk? Eventually, I came to love the bottom bunk, as I could tuck a blanket underneath the top bunk, all the way around, and pretend I was in a tent in the mountains. I remember one night when Mom came into our room, it was particularly chaotic.

It didn’t bother me though, because the pat answer that I always got when one of my friends had died was that they were very special 24 I’m Walking as Straight as I Can to God, and He wanted to bring them back to Heaven. Secretly I was always hoping that I was special enough for God to want to take me back too, as I didn’t fully grasp the concept that cp was not degenerative, and that my lifespan would not be affected by it. Mom used to get so upset whenever she had to break the news to me that one of my classmates had died, but I often ended up comforting her, repeating what I had been told, that it was okay because they were with God now.

When we told her what we wanted to be, she created job assignments. Perry, who was a hemophiliac, wanted to become a doctor, hoping to find a cure for his disease so others wouldn’t have to live like he did. I wanted to be an actress and a writer. One of my best friends, Steve Hughes, shared my enthusiasm for the arts. Steve and I were given the assignment of writing three plays and putting one on before the end of the school year. For an hour every day, we each worked on our job assignments. Steve and I were given the supply closet, set up as a makeshift office.
